Certified Origin V .T. Castilla y León

Vino de la Tierra” indicates a category of wines with a geographical indication, with specific characteristics determined by environmental and crop conditions, as established in each Geographical Indication, in Spanish “Indicacion Geografica Protegida” (I.G.P.) of Castilla y León.

This geographical indication is equivalent to the indications: regional wine (United Kingdom), vin de pays (France, Luxembourg and the Italian province of Valle d’Aosta), indicazione geografica tipica (Italy), vinho regional (Portugal), Landwein (Germany) or landwijn (Netherlands). The denomination may include needle wines, liqueur wines and overripe grape wines.

Vinos de la Tierra” are high quality products that have more freedom when it comes to making wines than in the Denominación de Origen” (D.O), in terms of the grapes used, their processing or the quantities of wine they can make. For this reason, many wine producers and oenologist choose this nomenclature to design their new products without so many restrictions as those marked by a D.O.

Wines of Castilla y León

V.T. Castile and Leon, in Spanish” Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León”, is a protected geographical indication(I.G.P.), used to designate the wines of the land made with grapes produced in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon. Under this protected indication, red, white and rosé wines are produced in 317 localities in the provinces of Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora.

A continental Mediterranean climate of scarce rainfall, together with the diversity of soils, are the most notable characteristics of the region, which roughly coincides with the Duero basin or northern sub-plateau, next to the mountainous perimeter that surrounds it.

However, the wines produced in Castile and Leon but which already have their own Certification of Origin are outside the Wines of the Land of Castilla y Leon. As, for example, Bierzo D. O., Ribera del Duero D.O., Rueda D.O., or Toro D.O.

Wines of the Land of Castile and Leon, in their diversity, present the following characteristics:

  • Young white wines are fresh and fruity, with great presence in the mouth, which differentiates them in a special way from the young white wines that are made in other regions.
  • Rosé wines, especially those made in traditional areas for this type of wine, are fresh, with aromas of red fruits and a pleasant palate. If they are from Prieto Picudo grape variety, they are very special, with an important body and fruity memory in the retro nasal route.
  • Red wines are powerful, with aromas of ripe fruit, great load of colouring matter, good structure and great capacity for long “crianzas” (aging).
  • Needle wines correspond to a very traditional elaboration in some areas of Castile and Leon. They tend to be rosé wines, with greater intensity of colour, fresh, great vividness, accentuated by the needle and greater structure in the mouth.
